Some History about Mens Plus Sized Christmas Sweaters

Back in 2008, ugly Christmas sweater parties were just starting to gain popularity and the only Christmas sweaters available for women were vintage 80's sweaters or the rare brand-new sweater that was sold at a big box store.  The only mens holiday sweaters available were high end Ralph Lauren Nordic sweaters or maybe a Nordic sweater from Woolrich.

So when men received invitations to ugly Christmas sweater parties they had a hard time finding a holiday themed sweater to wear.  Here at My Ugly Christmas Sweater, we were just starting out business on eBay in 2008, and were the first Christmas sweater company to market sweaters specifically to men. We began up-cycling pre-owned mens regular plain sweaters by adding holiday decorations to the sweater.

These home crafted mens Christmas sweaters were quick sellouts because there was huge demand and very little on the market suited for men to wear.  We were able to create holiday sweaters for men in sizes up to 2xl and 3xl and very rarely 4xl.  At that time, we were limited to the small number of plus sized pre-owned mens sweaters we could find to decorate.  We sold male plus sized customers pre-owned women's holiday themed ponchos that were decorated. Want to see examples of what we created? See our decorated holiday ponchos.

Before there were companies producing brand new mens big and tall Christmas sweater, customers would frequently call us looking for size 3x, 4x, or 5x mens sweaters and if we didn't have any in stock, we would often guide the caller as to how they can decorate their own sweater in a quick and easy way.

Crafting Your Own DIY Christmas Sweater - For the non-crafter

We understand that finding a plus size holiday sweater last minute can be difficult, so here's an idea on how to make your own at home. Remember that it's ok if it isn't perfect. It's not supposed to be!

This is one of the easiest ways to decorate a regular sweater to wear it to a holiday party. This idea is a good thing to do if you have been invited to a party last-minute and don't have anything to wear. (Note: check out the sweaters pictured above in this post however....you may be able to get them delivered in a day or two).

1. find a sweater in your closet that fits. Red or Green or Black or Ivory is best, but any color is ok

2. Go to a local store that sells Christmas decorations. Something like Walmart, Target or maybe CVS or Walgreens.  Buy a dozen or more Christmas Tree ornaments. The round ones work best, but any are ok. Smaller is better than larger.

3. Get string or yarn
4. Get safety pins
5. loop a small piece of yarn through each ornament and tie to make a loop
6. lay the ornaments out on the sweater in the shape of a Christmas tree outline.
7. attach the ornaments to the sweater in the shape of a Christmas tree using the safety pins, attaching the yarn to the pins, pinning on the INSIDE of the sweater so they dont show.
6. That's it! Just arrange the ornaments on the sweater. If you can't seem to get the shape of the Christmas tree done, then just randomly attaching the ornaments to the sweater is ok too.

After the party, you can remove the safety pins and your sweater can go back to your closet!
