Ugly Christmas Sweater Party History: It's hard to say where it first started, but many think that the first Ugly Sweater Party was held in Vancouver as a small house party, where it then grew to an annual fundraising party at the Commodore Ballroom. Towns like Dublin Ohio and Des Moines Iowa have big 'Epic' parties each year, and Cities like Kansas City, Fort Worth, and Boston all have fundraising events annually that have the 'Ugly Sweater Party' theme. Pub Crawls are catching on in Toronto and Chicago with names like the "12 Bars of Christmas Pub Crawl".

A theme party is always a great time, and attending an Ugly Christmas Sweater Party is guarenteed fun. Contests at parties are common, with the most covetted price being "1st Place Ugliest Sweater". Couples or friends often wear sweaters in the same tacky theme.

As the Ugly Sweater Party concept has caught on, the creativity of the sweaters and costumes has really taken off.  Contest winners don't limit themselves to an Ugly Sweater only...they wear Santa Boxers Shorts or a pair of Lime Green pants or a holiday skirt. Accessories are important, and headgear like bouncy antlers are critical for 1st place!

In an article in the Toronto Star , Laura Stone recommends "Go big, or go home. When chosing an ugly Christmas sweater, make sure it's as over-embellished, ill fitting and absurd as possible. No one wants to be mistaken for someone who'd actually wear the thing".
